Doreen Landrum (Crackpot Clay)
Pottery
Hi, I’m Doreen Landrum. I've been working with clay for 15 years. While I have been creating more and more strictly “art” pieces over the past few years, what I love most is sneaking art into everyday items! I like the idea of giving people a reason to pause and find joy in the regular things they do – to enjoy the art holding their olive oil as they cook, their coffee as they wake up, or even their toothbrushes as they get ready for the day. I also tend to sneak everyday items into the art – if a pot or kitchen tool can’t be found, it’s most likely in the studio, covered in clay.
I pay attention to the feel and function of an item as much as the aesthetics. The rim of a mug should curve over the lip and the belly should fit the hand curved around it. All my pieces are either hand-built or thrown on a wheel and glazed by hand (painted, dipped, or sprayed). This past year I've been experimenting with different techniques and I'm excited to share them with you. The process of creating has been an incredible outlet for me and has helped me embrace the inevitable mistakes and imperfections – some of my favorite items were created by accident!
